Everyone knows their ABCs, but it’s important to know the ABCs of diabetes, too. Keeping these three things in check can help lower your chances of having a heart attack, stroke, or other diabetes complications.

A: A1C

The A1C blood test gives you and your doctor a way to measure your average glucose control over the last two to three months. This test helps create an efficient and effective plan to keep your blood glucose under control. To stay on top of your diabetes management, it’s important to get your A1C tested at least two times a year.

B: Blood Pressure

Keeping your blood pressure at a manageable level is an important component of taking care of your diabetes. Talk to your doctor to get a healthy range for your blood pressure and learn how to keep it under control, in addition to getting it checked at every routine and non-routine visit to your doctor.

C: Cholesterol

Lipid or cholesterol management is very important when managing your diabetes. You can reduce macrovascular problems and prevent diabetes complications by lowering LDL cholesterol and triglycerides (the “bad” cholesterol) and raising HDL cholesterol (the “good” cholesterol). Get a cholesterol test at least once a year to make sure you’re on track and staying healthy.
